Aristotelis Chatziioannou, PhD
Electrical and Computer Engineer, Bioinformatician

Aristotelis Chatziioannou received the Diploma degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Metabolic Engineering and Biomedical Informatics from the National Technical University of Athens, Athens, Greece, in 1996 and 2005, respectively. He has been also active in the field of industrial consulting. From June 2004 to August 2005, he was with Alexander Fleming Biomedical Science Research Centre, as an expert in bioinformatics. Since September 2005, he is member of the Institute of Biology, Medicinal Chemistry and Biotechnology, National Hellenic Research Foundation, Athens, whereas since 2010 he is the Principal Investigator of the Metabolic Engineering and Bioinformatics Program. His current research interests include in-silico biology, knowledge mining in life sciences, genomic analysis, molecular pathway analysis, biological ontologies, bioinformatics, biostatistics, metabolic engineering, computational biology, and biomedical image processing. He is the author or coauthor of more than 100 journal and international conference papers in these fields.

Eleftherios Pilalis, PhD
Biochemist, Bioinformatician

Eleftherios Pilalis holds a BSc degree in Biochemistry, a MSc degree in Bioinformatics and Genomics, both from the Aix-Marseille University, France, and a PhD in Bioinformatics and Metabolic Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. He is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Bioinformatics and Metabolic Engineering Group of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, Athens, Greece. His research encompasses a wide spectrum of Bioinformatics applications in Biotechnology, having as main axis Systems Biology, i.e. the holistic approach of extraction and analysis of large-scale biological information in terms of integrative systems. He has participated in several funded research programs and has a wide publication record that includes contributions to Metabolic Engineering, Gene Expression Analysis, Biological Ontologies, Metagenomics and application of Machine Learning techniques to Biotechnology.

Ioannis Valavanis, PhD
Computer Engineer, Bioinformatician

Ioannis Valavanis holds a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A.), Greece (2003), a MSc in Bioinformatics from the University of Athens, Greece (2006) and a PhD degree from the N.T.U.A. (2009). His research has included the development of novel artificial intelligence and data mining techniques, microarray data pre-processing and analysis, structural bioinformatics and decision support systems. He has participated in several EU-funded and National Research initiatives and has published over 35 journal and conference articles or book chapters. During January 2010 – June 2013, he has been with the National Hellenic Research Foundation, Athens, as post-doctoral research fellow in bioinformatics. Since June 2013, he is with e-NIOS as a co-founder working on data mining techniques in biological data.
